Orbit’s family and friends announced his death in a statement shared on his verified Instagram account, revealing that he died at his home on July 23. The cause of death was not disclosed.
He was best known for his work on Madonna’s critically acclaimed 1998 album, Ray of Light, where his distinctive blend of electronic, techno and downtempo sounds helped shape the album’s atmospheric sound.
The project became a major commercial and critical success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earning the Grammy Award for Best Pop Album in 1999.
Orbit went on to work with Madonna on several other projects, including Music, MDNA and songs such as “Beautiful Stranger” and “American Pie.” Madonna once described him as a “complete madman genius.”
Earlier this year, Orbit revealed that he had completed an album he believed could serve as a sequel to Ray of Light and claimed he had approached Madonna’s camp about the project but received no response.
Beyond his work with Madonna, Orbit produced Blur’s 1997 album 13 and collaborated with artistes including U2, All Saints, Britney Spears, P!NK and Chris Brown.
He also enjoyed a successful solo career, particularly through his Strange Cargo series and his 1999 album Pieces in a Modern Style, which reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart.
Following news of his death, musicians who worked with Orbit paid tribute to him, remembering him for his talent, kindness and lasting influence on electronic and pop music.
His family said he would be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and generosity.
